Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania's second highest mountain and one of Africa's most spectacular and least-crowded treks. Often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbour Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a dramatically scenic volcanic crater route through five ecological zones — and serves as the perfect acclimatisation climb before a Kilimanjaro ascent.
The mountain sits within Arusha National Park, where African buffalos, colobus monkeys, elephants, and giraffes share the lower slopes with trekkers. An armed ranger accompanies all Meru treks due to the wildlife. The summit view — Kilimanjaro emerging above a sea of clouds at dawn — is one of the most breathtaking sights in East Africa.
Trek begins through montane forest, spotting colobus monkeys and buffalo. Ascent to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) for the first night. Wildlife is abundant on the lower slopes.
Day 2 climbs through heath and moorland to Saddle Hut, with an afternoon acclimatisation hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for the stunning Kilimanjaro views.
The midnight summit push from Saddle Hut climbs the narrow crater rim to Socialist Peak (4,566m). The 360° views include Kilimanjaro at dawn, the Rift Valley, and the distant Indian Ocean on clear days.
Descend via the ascent route back to Momella Gate, completing the circuit. Transfer back to Arusha for a celebratory dinner — or begin Kilimanjaro preparation if combining treks.
