Bird Watching
Nature & Wildlife Half or Full Day Easy Best: Nov–Apr (migrants)

Bird Watching

Tanzania has over 1,100 bird species — more than all of Europe. Expert birding guides lead dedicated birding safaris across the Northern Circuit and specialist sites like Lake Natron.

Tanzania is one of Africa's premier bird watching destinations, with over 1,100 species recorded — more than any country in continental Africa. From the iconic flamingo flocks of Lake Natron and Lake Manyara to the rare Ruaha hornbill (endemic to Tanzania), and from the raptors soaring above the Ngorongoro Crater to the colourful bee-eaters lining Tarangire's river banks, every Tanzania ecosystem offers extraordinary birding.

Beryx Travel's specialist birding guides have completed dedicated ornithological training and can identify species by sight and call across all Tanzania habitats. Whether you want to add 100 species to your life list or simply enjoy the colour and diversity of Tanzania's birdlife, we design dedicated birding days and full birding safari itineraries to match your goals.

How It Works

01

Dawn Start (6:00am)

Birding is best in the first two hours after dawn. We depart before sunrise with binoculars and field guides, targeting species active at first light in chosen habitats.

02

Habitat Birding

Different habitats host different species: woodland edges for turacos and sunbirds; open grassland for larks and pipits; lake shores for flamingos, herons, and waders; forest canopy for hornbills and barbets.

03

Guided ID & Recording

Your guide identifies every species by sight and call, helping you record sightings in your life list. Tanzania's top birding sites can yield 80–150 species in a single day.

04

Late Afternoon Session

A second birding session runs 4:30–6:30pm when activity peaks again. Raptors soar on late thermals, nightjars appear at dusk, and bee-eaters return to roost in spectacular flocks.

Activity Highlights

1,100+ Species

Tanzania has the highest bird species count in continental Africa — more than all of Europe combined.

Endemics

Kenya-Tanzania border specials and several endemic species make Tanzania a must-visit for serious listers.

Flamingo Flocks

Lake Natron hosts 2 million+ Lesser Flamingos — the world's largest breeding population.

Multi-Habitat Birding

One safari week can cover forest, savannah, wetland, alpine, and coastal habitats — maximum species diversity.
