Earth's Most Extreme Flamingo Breeding Site — An Alien Landscape of Red Soda
Lake Natron is one of Africa's most otherworldly and extreme landscapes. A shallow, highly alkaline soda lake in the Rift Valley, it turns a stunning red and orange when algae bloom under the searing sun. Despite — or because of — its caustic waters, Lake Natron is the breeding ground for over 75% of the world's Lesser Flamingo population, with up to 2 million birds nesting here.
The lake sits in the shadow of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth, which can be climbed at night for one of Africa's most dramatic summits. The surrounding lunar landscape of salt flats, geysers, and red-tinged water makes this one of Tanzania's most surreal destinations.

Aug–Oct is best for flamingos and dry weather. Jun–Oct for volcano trekking. Avoid Apr–May (long rains). Accessible year-round though roads can be rough in the wet season.
